Is Bootcamp For Me?

Where did bootcamps come from?

Where did bootcamps come from?

The earliest forms of bootcamps began in the early 1900s, used by Elmira Reformatory as a way to invoke discipline and keep inmates active, and by the US army in the 1940s to rehabilitate soldiers who committed criminal behaviour. In the 1950s the Canadian Royal Air Force workouts inspired the military fitness movement of that time, and can be credited with the workout programmes we know as bootcamps.

Why join a bootcamp?

Bootcamps offer the opportunity to build strength and endurance, however more than this, with modern exercise methodologies they can help improve flexibility and mobility, making for much better movement all-round. Mix this with good nutrition and they can set you up on a path to overall wellness.

What are the benefits of bootcamps over just going to the gym?

  • Sessions are varied so you get a full-body workout.
  • Sessions are led by professional trainers who take you through the best exercises and movements for you.
  • Your progress is tracked so you can see how you’re getting on from week to week.
  • Team training is one of the best ways to get out of a training rut.

In my experience, it is often the case that your fellow bootcampers become good friends.

What can I expect in the workouts?

A well-programmed bootcamp has a variety of workouts. They generally include a mix of mobility, aerobic, strength and speed elements in each session. Exercises you can expect to do are pulling and pushing movements combined into drills. A bootcamp workout is essentially a type of interval training - bursts of intense activity alternated with intervals of lighter activity - and every exercise can be modified to match individual ability.

Will I see results?

As with everything in the exercise world, following the guidelines from your bootcamp trainer will set you on a path that will yield good results. A well-structured bootcamp will result in an increase in your aerobic capacity, taking you longer to get puffed out, and strength, with improved ability to move weight and yourself.
